Rabbit Project
What's at Hawane?

We needed to develop a protein efficient meat and Wafuka kept suggesting rabbits. In 1996 we had tried rabbit farming and battled to keep packs of wild dogs away from the cute little things. We gave up.

Wafuka did not give up. In 2006, he built facilities to maintain over 150 rabbits and has succesfully reared them. He convinced us to extend the facilities to Hawane and so we have. The rabbits do not need too much attention. Given Hawane's ability to provide the rabbits the greens from the thrown away vegetable ends and the grass from the 15 hectare farm, feeding them is quite cheap.

The manure is taken up in straw, thrown onto a compost pile and into the fish pond for the fish to eat. Our intention is to then take the fish water and feed it into the vegetables so that we have a full cycle.

Solomon is our rabbit keeper at Hawane. He is also the father of a home with his wife Phumzile. He works in the vegetable garden and inspires the children to play soccer. Solomon feels we will be able to start using the rabbit meat by the close of this 2007--God willing. We plan to use the fur for making slippers. When we begin this, we will be getting the children that are interested, involved in the whole process.
