Hawane Farm and Children's Homes History
What's at Hawane?

The Hawane farm was purchased from Mr. Vaughn Wapp (who had purchased it from Mr.Jan Bural) who returned to his home country of New Zealand. The farm was attempting to grow Calla Lilies, more specifically "Zantedeuchia." Shops such as Woolworths were buying the potted plants via agents in Johannesburg.

We were attracted to the business of farming the Callas as well, as we thought it may well provide us an income generating project. However, as you all know, farming is a "mug’s game." What do they say, if you want to lose a million, go farming? We did not lose a million but we lost two thirds of our crop within the first growing season. Heavy rains hit us and the callas picked up an infection. They are an incredibly temperamental plant.

We tried diversifying and growing wattle seedlings. The wattle seedlings seemed really promising. It was not to be. We recognized we were not farmers. We were successful in producing our own subsistence vegetable gardens but drew the line in the sand on our losses.

When we realized the farm was not going to be as profitable as hoped we developed a crafts centre to try and obtain income from passing traffic. The farm borders the main road which tourists use to travel from the Kruger National Park to Mbabane.

As of 2004, we have been building homes on the farm to house HIV affected and infected children. The team we have is a wonderful group, determined to make a difference, one life at a time.
